What changed in this kitchen?
- A large granite island with seating for four.
- White cabinets with open upper shelving.
- A navy subway tile backsplash.
- Stainless appliances and recessed ceiling lights.
- Plank flooring in place of the old white tile.
Why does an island change how a kitchen works?
An island puts a work surface in the middle of the room, so prep, serving and homework can happen at the same time without people crossing paths. With seating on one side, it also becomes the place guests gather instead of standing in the way of the cook.
The catch is clearance. Plan on roughly 42 inches of walkway around the island, more where two people cook at once, or the island ends up making the kitchen feel smaller.

Common questions
What people ask about kitchen remodels in Wellington
Is $30,000 enough for a kitchen remodel?
It can be, if the scope stays tight. This Wellington kitchen, which added a large island and new flooring, landed in the $25,001 to $50,000 range. Staying near $30,000 usually means keeping the sink and range where they are and choosing stock or semi-custom cabinets over fully custom ones.
What is the most expensive part of redoing a kitchen?
Cabinetry is usually the largest line, followed by countertops and any work that moves plumbing, gas or electrical. An island adds to both, because it brings more cabinet boxes and a large slab of stone, which is why its size is worth settling early.
Can you replace flooring during a kitchen remodel?
Yes, and it is usually the best time. With the old cabinets out, new flooring can run continuously under the new layout, and you avoid cutting around fixed cabinets later. In this Wellington home, the old tile was replaced with plank flooring as part of the same job.
Do you need a permit to remodel a kitchen in Wellington, FL?
If plumbing, electrical or walls change, yes. Wellington is an incorporated village, so permits and inspections go through the Village of Wellington rather than Palm Beach County. Cosmetic work, like painting or swapping a faucet in place, usually does not need one.
Can you open up a closed kitchen to the living room?
Often, yes, but first you need to know whether the wall carries load and what runs through it. A non-bearing wall with no plumbing or wiring comes out easily. A bearing wall needs a beam sized by an engineer and a permit. Opening a kitchen also changes the flooring plan, which is a good reason to replace the floors in the same job.
